TimminsToday asked each of the candidates to submit a bio to introduce themselves to the voters. Here's Ward 5 candidate Rick Dubeau’s:

The reason I am running for re-election as a councillor is because the City of Timmins faces great challenges going forward. You need a councillor who has their own mind, who doesn’t follow along blindly. I do my homework, I have asked the difficult questions and I have made a difference.

I will continue to mandate,

  • that council and staff are responsible when spending your tax dollars.
  • that all projects will be based on a responsible business plan with proven facts
  • that council and staff are accountable
  • that council is totally transparent with plans for our community

I was born in Timmins and I am a proud bilingual citizen of our great city. I have been married to my wife Gilda for 27 years, she has practiced as a dental hygienist since 1981. Our daughter Rebecca has graduated with an Honors Degree from Nipissing University and has returned this year for a Master’s Degree.

I proudly served with the Timmins Fire Department for over 32 years. I began my career in the summer of 1981 as a volunteer firefighter and eventually became a full-time firefighter, a lieutenant and the chief training officer.

When the farmers’ market was shutting down, I led the fight to get it back and keep it local. I am still a volunteer member of the committee and it has grown stronger than ever.

My post high school education consists of certificates in:

Municipal Accounting & Finance & Municipal Administration Structure

• Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks & Treasurers of Ontario

Management Skills in Human Resources Selections, Effective Labour Relations

People Management Tools & Techniques, Effective Supervision

Effective Supervision-Production, Effective Supervision-Communication

• Northern College: Ontario Management Development Program

Graduate of the Ontario Fire College Company Officer Program
