TimminsToday asked each of the candidates to submit a bio to introduce themselves to the voters. Here's Ward 5 candidate John Ivanov’s:

I was born in Timmins in 1952 at St. Mary's Hospital on Pine and lived here until I graduated from Timmins High and Vocational. My father and mother were postwar immigrants from Latvia. I was their first Canadian born child and was given the Latvian names Janis Juris, which I anglicized to John George. A good part of my life was spent living in Toronto, Ottawa and Durham Region until I returned to Timmins approximately 15 years ago to look after my parents when my father had become legally blind and required assistance. I am divorced and am blessed with three amazing children and one absolutely gorgeous 1 1/2 year old granddaughter.

I originally worked for a stock brokerage and as controller of a roadbuilding firm in the Ottawa region but I have worked primarily in the capital equipment lease and finance industry both for corporations and company.

Throughout the years, I have expanded my knowledge base to include extensive financial statement analysis and business development. Through the Credit Institute of Canada, I studied commercial law. I have also completed and passed the General Securities Course through the Investment Dealers Association of Canada.

Over the last few years, I have been actively involved in many campaigns, municipal, provincial and federal. I have also been an active critic of council for the last three years, making presentations to council pushing for greater fiscal responsibility, greater transparency and greater public access and input into council decisions.

I would like to continue this advocacy of fiscal responsibility, transparency and public access to the decision-making process. My strong background in finance and financial analysis coupled with good old fashioned common sense should be a definite asset to the new council. The blatant waste of taxpayers’ money on frivolous spending must stop.
