Five new COVID-19 cases reported in the region

Five new COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in the Porcupine Health Unit area.

A third virus-related death has also been reported at Extendicare Kapuskasing. It's the 12th death in the region since the start of the pandemic.

The five new cases are in addition to the one announced this morning in the Hearst, Hornepayne area.

Of the new cases, two are linked to the Extendicare Kapuskasing outbreak, which was declared Jan. 7. One is in Moosonee and the exposure is international travel, one is in the Hearst, Hornepayne, and one is in Timmins. All of the people are in self-isolation.

To date, there have been 239 confirmed cases of the virus in the Porcupine Health Unit region. Of those, 167 are recovered and 12 people have died. There are 60 known active cases.

There are COVID-19 assessment centres in Timmins, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Kapuskasing, Smooth Rock Falls, Hearst, and Hornepayne.
