Third person charged with manslaughter in 2020 Cochrane death

The Timmins resident is also facing a trafficking charge and two counts of failing to comply with a release order

A third person has been charged with manslaughter in relation to a 2020 death in Cochrane.

June 11, 2020, a 34-year-old was found unresponsive at a residence and later died at the scene, according to James Bay OPP.

Two people were charged with manslaughter in May 2021.

Last week, a third person was charged as a result of the ongoing investigation.

Jamie Lewis Beckford, 42, of Timmins has been charged with:

  • Manslaughter, contrary to section 236(b) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Traffick in Schedule I Substance - Other Drugs, contrary to section 5(1) of the Controlled Drug and Substances Act (CDSA)
  • Failure to Comply with Release Order - (two counts), contrary to section 145(5)(a) of the CC 

The accused is slated to appear in court via video on June 16.

"As a law enforcement organization, the OPP's role in this crisis is to investigate opioid-related incidents, with an acute focus on the apprehension of those who produce, import and traffic illegal drugs. The OPP continues to work with community partners to strategically and collaboratively address the opioid crisis at the local and provincial levels," reads the OPP news release.
