2 charged with manslaughter in 2020 Cochrane death investigation

COCHRANE - Two people have now been charged in connection with a death which occurred nearly a year ago in Cochrane.

On June 11, 2020, members of the James Bay Detachment and Cochrane District Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to a residence on Sixth Avenue in Cochrane where a 34-year-old person was found unresponsive and later died at the scene.

As a result of the ongoing investigation by members of the James Bay Detachment Crime Unit and the Community Street Crime Unit, under the direction of the OPP's Criminal Investigation Branch, charges have now been laid.

Jason Prevost, 46 years of age from New Post First Nation Taykwa Tagamou; and Lea Korpan, 26 years of age from Cochrane, are both charged with manslaughter, contrary to section 236(b) of the Criminal Code, and traffic in schedule I substance - other drugs, contrary to section 5(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

The accused persons are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on June 8, 2021 in Cochrane.

The OPP continues to investigate opioid-related incidences with an acute focus on the apprehension of those who produce, import and traffic illegal drugs. The OPP continues to work with community partners to strategically and collaboratively address the opioid related issues at the local and provincial levels.
