Kirkland Lake driver charged after police seize suspected cannabis

KIRKLAND LAKE - On Feb. 16, 2021 at approximately 2 a.m., members of the Kirkland Lake Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop on a motor vehicle on Duncan Avenue South in the Town of Kirkland Lake.

The investigation revealed that the drive was breaching a recognizance and was in possession of drugs suspected to be cannabis.

As a result, Brian Benoit, 29 years of age of Kirkland Lake, was arrested and charged with the following:
    •    Failure to comply with release order, contrary to section 145(5)(a) of the Criminal Code, and
    •    Drive vehicle with cannabis readily available, contrary to section 12(1) of the Cannabis Control Act 2017.

The accused was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear before The Ontario Court of Justice in Kirkland Lake on March 25, 2021.
