APITIPI ANICINAPEK NATION - A man is facing an impaired charge after a police officer spotted him driving on the wrong side of the road.

A Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) officer working out of Apitipi Anicinapek Nation near Matheson pulled over a vehicle on May 4 just before 11:30 p.m. Police say the officer saw the vehicle being driven on the wrong side of the road.

"When the officer approached the driver, they observed an open liquor container in the vehicle. The officer also observed the driver was showing multiple signs of impairment by drug," said NAPS in a news release.

The male driver was arrested and transferred to the custody of OPP or testing by a drug recognition expert.

A 55-year-old man from Apitipi Anicinapek Nation is charged with operating a motor vehicle while impaired - alcohol and drugs. Police have not released his name because the charge hasn't been formally sworn in before the court.

The charge has not been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.

NAPS says it takes impaired driving very seriously because it remains a significant ongoing threat to community safety.
