Sunshine List reveals 2021's local top earners

The  2021 Sunshine List is out and the region's top doctor earned the highest salary last year, taking home over $230,000 more than the year before.

Each year, the province is required to release information on all public sector employees who were paid more than $100,000.

With hundreds of people from the Timmins area on the list, here are some of the top earners in 2021.

Porcupine Health Unit medical officer of health Dr. Lianne Catton made $593,659, about a 64 per cent increase from the year before.

At the health unit, over $4.4 million was paid out in salaries for the 31 people on the list.

The other top-earning health unit staff are:

  • Manager of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Services Lynn Leggett, $188,606
  • Manager of Foundations and Chief Nursing Officer Chantal Riopel, $181,605
  • Manager of Oral Health, Vision and Speech Anna Gauthier, $164,686
  • Manager of Health and Well-Being Joelle Aubin, $162,569
  • Manager of Corporate Services Mary-Lou Pollon, $156,809

At the City of Timmins, which includes salaries for municipal staff, Timmins Police and Timmins Firefighters, 142 people are on the list. That's a slight drop from 2020 when 145 per on the list. 

Five years ago, in 2017, 104 people made the cut.

In 2021, over $17.3 million was paid out in salaries to the 142 people on the Sunshine List. In 2020, the total was over $17.5 million.

Having made $217,130 last year, former police chief John Gauthier, who retired last month, is once again the highest earner at the city.

Other top earners include:

  • CAO Dave Landers, $207,545
  • Deputy police chief Henry Dacosta, $180,559
  • Director of growth and infrastructure Pat Seguin, $170,129
  • Fire chief Tom Laughren, $168,557
  • Staff Sgt. Chad Lilko, $162,555

After the employees at Timmins and District Hospital making over $100,000 nearly doubled in 2020, the number dropped in 2021.

For 2021, there are 122 people who made more than $100,000, whereas in 2020 there was 158 staff on the list. Five years ago, 61 people made the cut at the hospital.

The top five earners there are:

  • President and CEO Kate Fyfe, $284,000
  • Registered Nurse Lorna Moreau, $205,374
  • Vice president Clinical/Chief Nursing Officer Joan Ludwig, $201,341
  • Vice President of Human Resources Mike Resetar, $169,063
  • Director of integrated services and specialty programs Josee Jean, $168,775

The number of people on the sunshine list at District School Board Ontario North East has dropped to 329 from 346 in 2020. In 2019, there were 128 on the list. 

The top earners are:

  • Director of Education Lesleigh Dye, $211,429
  • Superintendent of Human Resources James Rowe, $174,854
  • Superintendent of Schools Steven Pladzyk, $165,629
  • Superintendent of schools Kristen Niemi, $163,419
  • Elementary teacher Monica Rusnak, $155,064

At Northern College, 73 staff are on the list, up from 71 in 2020. 

The top earner at the school was Dr. David Houston, who was the lead physician at the East End Family Health Clinic, who made $281,371 in 2021.

Timmins MPP Gilles Bisson made $133,508.
