Ahead of the 2022 municipal election, the mayor's salary is being reviewed in Timmins.

At last night's council meeting, Coun. Andrew Marks asked for a report on the mayor's remuneration. The review wouldn't affect the current sitting council and is for whoever wins the seat in the Oct. 24, 2022 election.

Marks is asking for the report in the first quarter of 2022 because it could affect the 2022 budget in December after the new council is sworn in. He wants the report to compare the mayor's salary with other cities in the north as well as municipalities of similar size.

“I believe it’s this council’s responsibility to make the decision for the upcoming council so that they’re not put into any undue hardship. It’s hard when politicians look at salaries or remuneration," Marks told council.

"The mayor’s position is the CEO of a multi-million dollar corporation, the City of Timmins. It is our chief promoter, our chief marketer, chief communicator and spokesperson for the corporation. This person is our leader, this person represents us to all of of our Northern Ontario communities and partners, as well as the provincial government and the federal government. This is obviously a key position within the municipality and I believe that fair remuneration attracts the best person who can represent all of us as residents in the City of Timmins."

In 2019, the first full year for this council, Mayor George Pirie's remuneration was $93,559.82 and $17.080.88 in expenses, for a total of $110,640.70.

The mayor's 2020 remuneration was $98,409.34 — a $4,849 increase from 2019 — and $3,376.24 in expenses, for a total of $101,785.58.
