Letter: Leadership hopeful delivers message former candidate can get behind

'I believe in hard work and this is a characteristic I look for in a candidate running for leadership of our party'

Conservative leadership hopeful Pierre Poilievre toured Northern Ontario over the weekend.

“The Conservative party is alive and well and growing stronger day by day.” Hundreds of enthusiastic party supporters joined us Saturday afternoon at the McIntyre Arena ballroom in Timmins to welcome federal leadership candidate Pierre Poilievre to the riding.

Mr. Poilievre’s cross-Canada leadership tour is generating a tremendous amount of excitement. In Timmins it raised a crowd of 400-plus Conservative supporters. I am told that crowds like that haven’t been seen in Timmins for decades.

Poilievre has been bringing in large crowds almost everywhere he goes, and Timmins was no different. He’s running for the federal leadership to make our country “The Freest in the World” and to “Give Canadians back control of their lives”.

I don’t know about you, but that is a message that I can get behind!

As the Timmins-James Bay Conservative party candidate of record in the 2021 election, I finished second to a long-time incumbent. Saturday’s turnout bodes very well for the next federal election.

I am absolutely impressed by the amount of people from our riding who came out to listen to Mr. Poilievre and their enthusiastic applause and cheers to the powerful messages made during his speech. I believe in hard work and this is a characteristic I look for in a candidate running for leadership of our party.

I would like to thank everyone who attended Saturday’s event, regardless of their political background.

The support that leadership candidates and the party is generating here in the north is a wakeup call.

Morgan Ellerton,
Timmins
