New COVID-19 case confirmed in Timmins

A new COVID-19 case has been confirmed in Timmins. 

The person is in self-isolation and the exposure is being investigated, according to the Porcupine Health Unit. 

This is the first case confirmed in Timmins in more than a month. The last cases were reported by the health unit Feb. 9, although there have been cases reported in other areas of the region since then. 

Both of the Feb. 9 cases are confirmed to be the South African variant of concern. 

To date, there have been 344 confirmed cases of the virus. Of those, 314 are recovered and 25 people have died. There are five known active cases. 

Vaccine clinics start in the region this week. 

Tomorrow, there are clinics for people over the age of 80 in Timmins and Smooth Rock Falls. Wednesday, March 17 there is a clinic for Indigenous people 55 years of age and older at the Mountjoy Arena. 

There are COVID-19 assessment centres in Timmins, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Kapuskasing, Smooth Rock Falls, Hearst, and Hornepayne.
