Vaccine clinics for Indigenous people 55 and older start next week

A COVID-19 vaccine clinic is being held for Indigenous people over the age of 55 next week. 

The clinic is being held Wednesday, March 17 at the Mountjoy Arena from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

It is being held by the Porcupine Health Unit, in collaboration with the Misiway Milopemahtesewin Community Health Centre, Indigenous leaders and Indigenous-led organizations. 

First Nations, Métis and Inuit people born in 1966 or earlier are eligible for the clinic. 

Appointments are required and walk-ins will not be accepted.

People who qualify for this clinic can book an appointment online here or call 1-800-461-1818.

This only the start of clinics for this priority group, according to the health unit.

For people who do get an appointment for the vaccination, the health unit has a few tips. They are:

  • Do not arrive early. People will not be allowed into the clinic before their appointment time.
  • Do not gather outside.
  • Bring a mask and your health card.

A clinic In Timmins tomorrow for people 80 years and over is full. 

To date in the Porcupine Health Unit region, there have been 343 confirmed cases of the virus. Of those, 314 are recovered and 25 people have died. There are four known active cases.

There are COVID-19 assessment centres in Timmins, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Kapuskasing, Smooth Rock Falls, Hearst, and Hornepayne.
