Health unit confirms three more COVID-19 cases

One is linked to the Extendicare Kapuskasing outbreak, two are in the Hearst, Hornepayne area

Three new COVID-19 cases are being reported in the Porcupine Health Unit region today. 

One is connected with the outbreak at Extendicare in Kapuskasing. The person is in self-isolation.

Two cases are in the area of Hearst, Hornepayne. The people are the contacts of a case and in self-isolation.

To date, there have been 227 confirmed cases of the virus in the health unit region. Of those, 166 are recovered and 11 people have died. There are 51 known active cases.

An outbreak at Extendicare in Kapuskasing was declared Jan. 7. An update yesterday from the facility said there were 27 residents and three staff members with active cases. The health unit did not indicate if the new case is a staff member or resident. 

The update also noted that staff is being added to support the team at the facility. Residents who had previously tested negative for the virus are all be retested tomorrow.

The first doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine arrived in some Northern Ontario regions yesterday. A local vaccination update from the Porcupine Health Unit slated for this morning has been cancelled.

There are COVID-19 assessment centres in Timmins, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Kapuskasing, Smooth Rock Falls, Hearst, and Hornepayne.
