Residents at Extendicare Kapuskasing who have tested negative for COVID-19 will be re-tested this week.

An outbreak of the virus was declared at the 61-bed long-term care facility Jan. 7.

To share developments on the outbreak with the community, the staff is now providing daily updates on the situation.

According to today's update, there are 27 residents and three staff members with active cases. Two residents have died.

"All residents continue to isolate in their rooms, where they are being provided with meals and individual care and support," reads the statement.

The staff members are in self-isolation at home until the health unit clears their return to work.

"Residents are being closely monitored for symptoms. Should any resident exhibit symptoms, we work with public health to ensure they are tested immediately. Ongoing resident testing and weekly staff testing is a critical part of our surveillance efforts to identify and isolate any new instances of the virus as quickly as possible in an effort to contain virus spread. As advised by the Porcupine Health Unit, all negative residents will be re-tested on Wednesday, Jan. 27," according to the update.

"We continue to add staff to support our care team, including further registered staff and personal  support workers on-site as of this weekend, and have been receiving additional support from our health  partners in ensuring enhanced levels of care to our residents."

The facility is also proactively auditing to make sure staff are properly using personal protective equipment (PPE), and following hand hygiene and cleaning services.
