COVID-19: Here's the situation in Timmins today

The Porcupine Health Unit reported one new COVID-19 case today.

According to the organization, the case is an individual currently self-isolating outside of the region.

It is the 84th confirmed case of the virus for the Porcupine Health Unit. Of those, 71 people have recovered and nine people have died. There are four known active cases. 

In September, 10 new cases were reported, including the first instances of the virus on the James Bay coast. In August, there were two positive tests. 

In September, 7,079 tests were done in the region, which is an increase from August when 4,452 tests were completed.

Ontario Public Health announced its highest daily figure for positive COVID-19 cases with 732 reported today. There have now been 52,980 lab-confirmed cases in the province, of which 44,850 people have recovered. There are currently 5,203 active cases in Ontario.

In reponse to the rising number of cases, new public health measures were announced today. Effective tomorrow, wearing a mask while shopping, on public transit and at work is mandatory across the province. Social circles have also been paused, and people are being asked to limit close contact with people outside your immediate household. Read more about the changes here.

People travelling to Moose Factory will need permission to book flights and charters with Thunder Air and Air Creebec. Moose Cree First Nation announced the changes to help prevent more confirmed COVID-19 cases on the island. More details are available here.
