Santa Claus won't be taking his annual trip through downtown Timmins.

The 2020 Timmins Santa Claus parade has been cancelled for the first time in its 31-year history due to COVID-19. The Timmins Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Timmins Business Improvement Association made the announcement today.

Instead, the 2019 parade will be broadcast on Eastlink.

"The decision that we made, we definitely took the time to think about this and to ensure that we were making the right decision," said Mel Verreault, chamber president.

The event usually attracts around 10,000 people to the downtown core, according to BIA chair Jamie Roach.

He said it's a well-attended, well-loved event. While there's disappoinment that it's cancelled, he said it's the right thing to do.

"I know many of the local businesses host evening events both late afternoon and into the evening, whether it's serving hot chocolate or giving out candy to the kids. It'll have an impact, there's no doubt," he said.

Santa made a special appearance for the announcement.

"This year is going to look a little different. Now Santa must make sure that we all stay healthy and listen to our health officials so that I can make a visit to you this Christmas Eve," he said.

The 2019 parade will be televised again on Eastlink Saturday, Dec. 5 at 6 p.m.
