Marks, Murray seeking re-election

Both are running in Ward 5

Two familiar names are looking for another term at the Timmins council table.

Andrew Marks and Kristin Murray have each filed their nomination papers for the October municipal election.

Time is running out for people interesting in running for council. The nomination deadline is this Friday, Aug. 19 at 2 p.m. The municipal election is on Oct. 24.

Both Marks and Murray were elected to represent Ward 5 in the last election. At the last council meeting, Murray was sworn in as mayor to fill the role left vacant when former mayor George Pirie was elected as Timmins MPP in June.

Marks is a life-long Timmins resident and currently sitting in his fifth term representing Ward 5.

He's putting his name forward again to be a voice of experience at the council table and making the lives of Ward 5 residents better by representing them.

"I look forward to the upcoming campaign and sharing ideas about how to grow our great City.   This is an unprecedented time in our history and serious, rational people need to be on council," said Marks.

Murray was first elected to council in the 2018 election. After being appointed as mayor, she's the first person of colour and first Indigenous person to hold the city's highest political seat.

Before being elected, she was actively engaged in the community.

"Being on council has allowed me to elevate the voices of those in our community. I'm seeking re-election to be able to continue the community-engaged grassroots work that I am authentically committed to carry out, whether that be in the arts and culture space, growing our future leaders through mentorship opportunities, and utilizing innovative approaches to addressing our communities challenges," she said.

"Given my commitment to advancing our community, if elected this upcoming term I intend to work towards ensuring that Timmins is on the map in a good way. I have always had a vision that Timmins will reach its full potential and I look forward to working with council in making that vision a reality."
