Fishing the North

With winter coming and the first ice starting to appear, I thought I would write a little reminder to use extreme caution when venturing out on new ice.

With winter coming and the lakes starting to freeze, ice anglers are chomping at the bit while they wait for safe ice to come.

I met Rock Bouchard back in 1993 after catching a nice fourteen and half inch perch. I heard about his taxidermy work so decided to bring him my perch to mount for me. When I walked into his shop I was taken aback by the quality of work he did.

Every spring, many moose hunters apply in the moose draw for chance of being picked for a tag. This year in Zone 29 - which is one in the Timmins area - there were 47 Bull and 362 Cow moose tags available for the archery draw.

This past Sunday I was watching the weather network during lunch and they were saying that a cold front would be coming in around one o'clock.

September 6 and 7 saw anglers from across Northeastern Ontario heading to compete in the Mattagami First Nation Fall Walleye Classic for a chance at winning the first place prize of $8000.

I have always said that there are so many good anglers living in Northeastern Ontario. Some enjoy fishing with friends and family while others enjoy tournament fishing. Then you have the anglers such as Eric Germain which enjoys both.

This Saturday May 10th will see for the first time a Tackle Swap is held in Timmins, hosted by the Wannabe Fisherman at R. Ross Beattie School from 10am until 3 pm.

Many anglers are used to running Bottom Bouncers and spinners, a floatting jig, plain hook (both with your choice of bait), a spoon or a shallow running minnow bait. You can also run the same things on a three way.

After the late spring, high water conditions and strong currents the City of Timmins has placed the docks back in for another season. The docks are located down by the public boat launch for everyone to enjoy.
