Gold was little changed above $1,165 an ounce in Europe on Friday as buying dampened further price rises, and as the financial markets awaited U.S. economic growth data. The metal has slipped nearly 6 percent so far in July, its biggest monthly loss since December's 7 percent slide, as concerns over euro zone sovereign debt levels, which sent the metal to a record $1,264.90 an ounce in June, receded. Spot gold was bid at $1,167.70 an ounce.

City to explore multi-pad arena concept That's easy too. A lack of courage to do the right thing. You and I can let our houses rot ... public officials cannot allow public buildings to fall into a state of disrepair. You have to provide for the future. It might take another 10-15 year for city council to do the right thing. By that time the cost of the project will double. One politician delayed the new bridge over the mattagami and it went from a $3 million project to a $9 million project. The same guy delayed the police building and it went from a $4 million project to a $11 million project. Cowardice is costly. 28.07.10 11:34 By Editor
City to explore multi-pad arena concept If the business plan was such a slam dunk 5 years ago, how/why did it fall apart? And what has changed over the last 5 years that makes this closer to happening now? A single multi-pad complex with a single minor hockey association is definitely the way to go. Now, the question is how do we keep the momentum going... especially in an election year. 27.07.10 11:47 By Al Grenier
City to explore multi-pad arena concept Great question - it was answered five years ago. A new facility is financed by closing money-losing facilities and reducing costs by consolidating. A proper business plan, which was in place 5 years ago as well, uses the EXISTING tax dollars to finance the facility by eliminating the Million dollar a year deficit. Timmins would also have to regain control over minor hockey by going to a single-association system. Right now, three minor hockey associations control everything - it is the tail wagging the dog. Timmins is the only city of its size in North American with three minor hockey associations. 26.07.10 17:40 By Editor
City to explore multi-pad arena concept I certainly love it when people compare Timmins to cities with three or four times the population with huge tax bases. To build the dream arena you would need 30 to 40 million dollars. Where is the money going to come from? Can this community support that type of commitment? Not a chance. I have not heard the question that should be asked. Why have these building been allowed to fall into such a state, and are the people who did nothing to try and keep them up to par still employed? 26.07.10 13:31 By Bryce Kulik
City to explore multi-pad arena concept I've been saying for quite awhile that Timmins has the worst arenas in this area! Look at KL, SRF, Cochrane, they are way ahead of Timmins when it comes to arenas. I will be glad to see a new arena, hopefully before it's my time to go! 21.07.10 13:01 By LisaD
City to explore multi-pad arena concept It's funny that it took a consultant to say what we all have been saying for years. sports facilities add to quality of life and are a sense of pride for the community but they are also to the first things cut at budget time. I am concerned that a councillor is talking about closing down more arenas. typical. 21.07.10 09:36 By daler
City to explore multi-pad arena concept This is indeed a step in the right direction. A new multi purpose recreational facility is long overdue in our community. Keep going council; don't let this fall off the rails. Thanks 21.07.10 07:52 By Jamie Roach
City to explore multi-pad arena concept I am encouraged that council is debating and exploring a multi-pad concept. It is long overdue and is welcome news. My hope is that it is done right and includes a major pad with proper seating capacity to enable the city to host larger sporting and entertainment events. Some examples of multi-pads that could work in Timmins: Cornwall - New MultiSports Facility www.cornwall.ca/.../MultiSportsFacility.asp (http://www.cornwall.ca/en/recreation/MultiSportsFacility.asp) Niagara Falls - Gale Centre www.niagarafalls.ca/.../index.asp (http://www.niagarafalls.ca/city_hall/departments/parks_recreation_and_culture/arenas/complex/index.asp) The ultimate multi-pad arena (size the main pad to fit our market - somewhere between 3500 & 4500 seats) Windsor - WFCU Centre www.wfcu-centre.com/about.html (http://www.wfcu-centre.com/about.html) 19.07.10 23:24 By Al Grenier
Neighbourhood Watch returning You would be surprised at how many people see things and don't want to get involved. This is a program designed to get neighbours to talk so they can get to know each other. They are also advised at how to handle the situation. This way they are more likely to report suspicious people in their neighbourhood. 13.07.10 12:06 By Optimistic

Neighbourhood Watch returning What a silly program complete with useless stickers and signs, I guarantee that Neighborhood Watch has 0 impact on crime. If thieves aren't deterred by the possibility of getting arrested, beaten up or shot, there is no way that a few stickers and a street sign are going to do anything. Criminals obviously assume that people will be call the police if they are seen breaking into a house, that's common sense(people dont need a a street sign to tell them to report someone breaking into their neighbors house). 11.07.10 10:44 By John

NAN applauding tax exemption I'm an aboriginal off reserve and have the very right to live wherever I please. Did you know that there are not enough opportunities to stay in such a remote location in a reserve? Just like any other place in Nortern Ontario. And just to clarify, not all Aboriginals support the extreme oppositions against HST such as roadblocks or pay toll booths. I think that if we are going to live as equals this HST is going to happen regardless and for the better. The only dismay I have is how the government didn't communicate these issues directly to First Nation communities via consultation, which shows the lack of respect towards aboriginals and our rights. The imposition of HST may inflict on our treaty rights, however there should be an agreement in which this HST that aboriginals pay will go towards improving conditions in first nation communities. That way we are meeting in the middle. 26.06.10 14:40 By Samantha, 22
Gold hits new high inflation.us/videos.html (http://inflation.us/videos.html) How far gold can rise, $2,000, $3,000, $4,000 per ounce? Though what is more important is the realization that when that happens the purchasing power of paper money will have been reduced to a fraction of what it represented in the olden days. In other words it will not be the nominal value that is of importance but the goods that can be bought with the currency or gold. Ever thought why people refer to money as ?paper? money!? 21.06.10 05:40 By William
