Fishing the North

With the water just starting to freeze, I ran into a friend that happens to live on an island. During this time he stays in town with family as he waits for safe ice before traveling back and forth to his cottage safely.

I recall as a child riding along Riverside Drive or the Airport Road, and only seeing an occasional angler fishing this section of the Mattagami River

A look at the history of this wonderful river

It was a real pleasure to have had this opportunity to learn more about the Sturgeon Project and to have met such a passionate young lady that was doing this study.

With $25,000 in prizes up for grabs, September 11 saw anglers flocking to compete at the Mattagami First Nation 3rd Annual Fall Classic Tournament which was held on September 12 and 13.

Three years ago, leading up to the Mattagami First Nation Spring Walleye Tournament, I received news that the team that usually shared the cabin with me and my tournament partner were unable to fish it.

I recently had an opportunity to go on a day trip to fish a section of the Mattagami River known as the Lower Sturgeon with an angler named Jeff Vipond.

While at the Lund AYA tournament this year an angler came over and introduced himself. After talking and sharing a few laughs with Sebastien, we planned a day trip together.

Over the years of tournament fishing many of us have come to know the familiar faces that fish them. Although we seem to exchange a few words and laughs from time to time with them, unfortunately we really don't know much more about them.

The Gogama 2nd Annual Walleye Tournament was nothing short of being a shootout this year.
