A woman was injured in what police are calling an "unprovoked, but deliberate" assault in downtown Timmins.

Timmins Police were called to a laneway off of Birch Street South early in the morning on Friday, Sept. 15 after a 26-year-old woman was assaulted and received injuries to her head.

Police allege that a man assaulted the pedestrian "by striking the female victim in an unprovoked but deliberate manner."

The victim's coworker saw the assault in progress and helped the woman while calling the police.

The suspect was located later that day in the area of Birch Street and Alqonquin Boulevard.

A 25-year-old man is charged with two counts of assault, breach of recognizance, and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order.

The accused was held in police custody for a bail hearing today.

None of the charges have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
