The Timmins Police Service conducted intensive snowmobile patrols on Friday, Jan. 29 in areas identified as being prone to violations of the Motorized Snow Vehicles Act and the Trespass to Property Act.

In all, 33 snowmobilers were stopped to ensure that they, and their respective snowmobiles, were in full compliance with the applicable statutes governing snowmobiles and operator conduct.

One operator was charged with:
    •    Drive under suspension contrary to the Highway Traffic Act
    •    Operate MSV - no registration number contrary to the Motorized Snow Vehicles Act
    •    Operate MSV - no insurance contrary to the Motorized Snow Vehicles Act

Another operator was charged with operating his snowmobile while having a component or device (muffler) removed or modified contrary to the Motorized Snow Vehicles Act.

The majority of operators stopped and inspected were found to be in full compliance in regards to having a valid trail pass, operator’s licence and requisite insurance coverage.

Verbal warnings were issued to three operators found not to be in possession of the appropriate documentation for inspection on demand by the police.

These patrols form part of the Timmins Police Traffic Safety Strategy that is focused on enhancing vehicular and pedestrian safety in those areas within our jurisdiction.

The Timmins Police would much rather educate than have to prosecute motorists of any description. That said, where public safety and the responsible enjoyment of recreational property is concerned, these measures are deemed necessary.
