Two face stunt driving charges in unrelated incidents

Both drivers clocked at 50km/h or more over posted speed limit

HARLEY TOWNSHIP - On Oct. 3, 2020 shortly before 12:30 a.m., a member from the Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was conducting stationary radar patrol on Highway 11 in the Township of Harley.

A vehicle approached the officer's location travelling in excess of 150 km/h in a posted 90km/h zone.

The 27-year-old driver from Markham is charged with stunt driving - excess speed contrary to section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).

The vehicle was impounded and the drivers licence has been suspended for seven days.

HILLIARD TOWNSHIP - On Oct. 3, 2020 shortly after 1 p.m., a member from the Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was conducting stationary radar patrol on Highway 11 in the Township of Hilliard.

A northbound vehicle approached the officer's location, travelling in excess of 140 km/h in a posted 90km/h zone.

The 23-year-old driver from Winnipeg, Man., is charged with:
    •    Stunt driving - excess speed contrary to section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA),
    •    Possess illegal licence, contrary to section 35(1)(a) of the HTA, and
    •    Drive motor vehicle - no licence, contrary to section 32(1) of the HTA.

The vehicle was impounded for seven days, and the drivers licence has been seized.

Both drivers were released by way of a Court Summons and are scheduled to appear at court at a later date in the City of Temiskaming Shores.

Aggressive driving, including speeding, is one of the leading causal factors in traffic deaths in OPP patrolled areas.
