Timmins resident facing kidnapping charge in Sault Ste. Marie

Police believe the accused had only been in the Sault for three or four days prior to the incident and did not know the victim

A 36-year-old from Timmins is facing charges of kidnapping, assault, and others after being arrested on Thursday.

On Wednesday around 9 p.m., police say the victim in the incident got off a city transit bus on Wellington Street East near Pim Street and the accused struck them and forced them into a residence in the 700 block of Wellington Street East. While at the residence, police say the victim was also assaulted.

On Thursday, the victim escaped the accused and contacted police. Officers responded and subsequently arrested the accused. A search of the accused found them to be in possession of pepper spray and a substance believed to be fentanyl.

Vincent Belair of Timmins had been charged with:

  • kidnapping
  • assault
  • uttering threats
  • possession of a controlled substance
  • unauthorized possession of a prohibited device
  • breach of probation – failing to keep the peace and be of good behaviour
  • breach of judicial release order – not to possess weapons
  • possession of a prohibited device

Police say that, during the investigation, officers discovered the accused has only been in the community for three or four days and prior to the incident, did not know the victim.

The investigation is ongoing.
