The Timmins Police Service has charged three local persons with impaired driving related Criminal Code offences stemming from separate incidents that occurred so far during the festive RIDE campaign in Timmins.
A Timmins Police Service officer responded to a traffic complaint during the evening hours of Saturday, Dec. 5 and located the subject vehicle being operated on Algonquin Blvd.
A traffic stop was initiated by the Timmins Police officer where it was noted that there were 5 children in the vehicle varying in age from 2 to 9 years of age. Based on the observations made by the officer, the driver of the Dodge Caravan was compelled to complete on site breath testing with the use of an Approved Screening Device.
The driver registered a fail and was subsequently arrested and taken to the Timmins Police station to complete further breath testing procedures. Arrangements regarding the welfare of the children were addressed by the Timmins Police Service in conjunction with the appropriate local child care agency.
As a result of the incident, Michelle Zele, 28, of Timmins, has been charged with:
- Impaired operation of a motor vehicle contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
- Operate motor vehicle – concentration in excess of 80 mgs of alcohol per 100 mls of blood contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
The accused was released from police custody on the strength of an Undertaking compelling her to attend at Provincial Court in Timmins on Jan. 13 to address the charges laid against her.
In a second incident, a Timmins Police Service officer responded to a traffic complaint during the morning hours of Thursday, Dec. 10 and located the subject vehicle being operated on Hwy 101 near Carium Road.
A traffic stop was initiated by the Timmins Police officer and the driver was interviewed.
Based on observations made by the officer, the driver of the Toyota 4-Runner SUV was compelled to complete on site breath testing with the use of an Approved Screening Device.
The driver registered a fail and was subsequently arrested and taken to the Timmins Police station to complete further breath testing procedures.
A quantity of a controlled substance was located on the driver’s person pursuant to the arrest.
As a result of the incident, Chad Howson, 37, of Porcupine, has been charged with:
- Impaired operation of a motor vehicle contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
- Operate motor vehicle – concentration in excess of 80 mgs of alcohol per 100 mls of blood contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
- Possession of a controlled substance contrary to the Controlled Drug and Substances Act
The accused was released from police custody on the strength of an Undertaking compelling him to attend at Provincial Court in Timmins on Dec. 22 to address the charges laid against him.
In a third incident, a Timmins Police Service officer responded to a traffic collision that occurred during the afternoon hours of Thursday, Dec. 10 on Dalton Road west of the city.
Upon arrival at the scene of the collision it was determined that the driver and none of his 4 passengers had sustained any injuries.
The Timmins Police officer then focused his attention on the driver of the Pontiac Vibe. Based on observations made by the officer, the driver was compelled to complete on site breath testing with the use of an Approved Screening Device.
The driver registered a fail and was subsequently arrested and taken to the Timmins Police station to complete further breath testing procedures.
It was further determined the driver was the holder of a G-1 licence with specific limitations that apply to him.
As a result of the incident, Anthony Lazarus, 29, of Timmins, has been charged with:
- Impaired operation of a motor vehicle contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
- Operate motor vehicle – concentration in excess of 80 mgs of alcohol per 100 mls of blood contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
- Class G-1 licence holder – drive while unaccompanied contrary to the Highway Traffic Act
The accused was released from police custody on the strength of an Undertaking compelling him to attend at Provincial Court in Timmins on Dec. 22 to address the charges laid against him.
