Attempted murder charge laid in Timmins shooting, 1 suspect still at large

One person has been charged with attempted murder and an arrest warrant is out for a second suspect after a shooting in Timmins last week. 

The morning of May 11, OPP pulled over a vehicle in Timmins and the two men in the vehicle were identified as suspects in the Sixth Avenue shooting on May 7. 

One of the suspects was arrested during the traffic stop, while the second male suspect fled the area on foot, said Timmins Police in a news release. 

The shooting happened around 6:30 a.m. on May 7. Shortly after, there was a crash connected to the incident that happened in the Maple Street North and Seventh Avenue area. 

One man was shot and brought to the hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Juelz McRae, 20, of Markham is charged with attempted murder, numerous firearms offences, and charges relating to the crash. He is in custody waiting for a bail hearing.

The second suspect who fled the traffic stop on May 11 has been identified. A warrant has been issued for his arrest for attempted murder and firearms offences, said police. 

None of the charges have been tested in court and the accused are considered innocent unless proven guilty.

After the May 7 shooting, Sixth Avenue between Cedar and Pine streets was closed for the investigation. The incident also led to the closure of two elementary schools — Pope Francis Elementary and Jacques Cartier.

The Sixth Avenue area has been active for police investigations in the last six months. 

In March, two people were charged after a shooting in the area of Sixth Avenue and Cedar Street North.

In January, police issued an advisory about a heavy police presence in that area of town. In that incident, a man was arrested at the scene and a firearm was seized, though no further details were released.

In September 2023, two people were injured in a shooting and a man was charged with attempted murder.
