Police are confirming there was no shooting in Timmins and reminding people to "consider the validity of the source" when it comes to social media posts.

Timmins Police says it's finished its investigation into an incident yesterday (Jan. 15) in the north end of the city, in the area of the Canadian Tire gas station on Waterloo.

Someone called police about a female who allegedly had a gunshot wound.

"Based on a medical assessment it was determined that the injury was in fact not the result of a gunshot, but strictly a medical condition," reads a news release from police.

The woman was assessed by paramedics and brought to the hospital for a more thorough exam of the injury.

"The Timmins Police Service is aware that this unfounded incident generated a significant amount of aimless conjecture and speculation on social media platforms," said police in the news release.

Police are reminding people to "consider the validity of the source" on social media.

"Had there been any legitimacy to this incident, proper public notifications would have taken place for public safety reasons," reads the release.
