Suspected methamphetamine seized during Englehart RIDE check

ENGLEHART - On Nov. 29, 2021 shortly after 2 a.m., a member from the Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was conducting Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) on First Street near Sixth Avenue in the Town of Englehart.

Further investigation revealed that a motor vehicle was travelling on Seventh Avenue away from the RIDE checkpoint.

The officer stopped the vehicle shortly after and the officer recognized the driver to be wanted on an outstanding warrant and was placed under arrest. Furthermore, the driver did not have a valid driver's licence.

A search incident to arrest, yielded a quantity of a suspected controlled substance.

The driver, Andrew Parker, a 50-year-old resident of Englehart, was arrested and charged with:
    •    driving while under suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)
    •    fail to surrender insurance card, contrary to section 3(1) of the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act (CAIA)
    •    possession of a schedule I substance - methamphetamine, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA)

The accused was held for a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Jan. 11, 2022 in the City of Temiskaming Shores.

The passenger, a 51-year-old resident of Chamberlain Township, was recognized as being wanted on outstanding warrants and was also arrested.

The OPP reminds motorists that any amount of alcohol or drug can impair one's ability to drive. OPP officers will work around the clock during the campaign, conducting RIDE check stops across North East Region. These enforcement efforts, combined with the help of all citizens, to intervene when they suspect that someone is driving, or about to drive after consuming alcohol or drugs, will prevent innocent lives from being lost this holiday season. If you observe a suspected impaired driver, please call 911 or contact the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122 and report it.
