A trailer measuring how fast vehicles are going shows that 84 per cent of vehicles on the main road in Porcupine are speeding.

The Timmins Police Service set up its speed trail on King Street from Aug. 23 to Sept. 6. The device was located at the Coott Lane intersection, tracking eastbound traffic as they left the Porcupine River bridge.

Of the 30,131 vehicles whose speed was recorded, 25,407 were speeding, according to the data shared by police.

The posted speed limit on that section of road is 50 km/h. Police say the 85th percentile of vehicles logged were going 67 km/h, with the highest speed recorded being 194 km/h.

"A considerable number of residents in this area have small children or elderly relatives in their households and are concerned about motorists who engage in aggressive driving as this persistent behaviour poses a threat to their safety," said police in a news release.

In response to the data, officers are doing targeted enforcement in the area.

Yesterday (Sept. 7), police say three speeding tickets were handed out in a "relatively short period of time" for drivers going 20 km/h above the speed limit.

"Motorists are also reminded of the enhanced penalties that are attached to stunt driving offences where excessive speeds can lead to driver's licence suspensions and the impounding of vehicles," said police.
