The province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in after the death of a 16-year-old boy in Timmins.

Timmins Police officers were called to a Timmins address around 12:45 a.m. on April 4 for a youth in medical distress, according to the SIU.

"Upon the arrival of paramedics and police, the youth was observed to be in an agitated state. As such officers attempted to restrain him for assessment," reads the preliminary information from the SIU.

The teen's vital signs went absent on the way to the hospital and he was admitted to the intensive care unit. He was pronounced dead at 10:35 a.m. on April 5. The post-mortem is tomorrow in Sudbury.

The SIU is an arms-length agency that investigates police-involved incidents where there has been a death, serious injury, allegations of sexual assault, or the discharge of a firearm at a person.

Two SIU investigators and one forensic are assigned to the case. There is one subject officer and one witness that has been identified.

Anyone with information about the investigation should contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. Video evidence can be uploaded here.
