The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has ended its investigation into the serious injuries sustained by a man arrested by Timmins Police after jumping off a roof earlier this month.

Based on the preliminary inquiries, SIU director Joseph Martino said "there is patently nothing to investigate as far as the potential criminal liability of any officer is concerned in connection with the man’s injuries."

The SIU is an arms-length agency that investigates police-involved incidents where there has been a death, serious injury, allegations of sexual assault, or the discharge of a firearm at a person.

The Timmins incident happened the evening of May 4.

Timmins Police officers entered a residence to execute a search warrant. A 20-year-old man was on the second floor, climbed through a window onto the roof and jumped to the ground, according to the SIU.

After running for a brief period, the man collapsed and was arrested. At the hospital, it was determined he fractured both heels.

"As it is evident that the man jumped of his own volition, and that no police officer was present on the roof or had otherwise interacted with him before his leap, I am left to conclude that the man is alone responsible for his injuries. Accordingly, the investigation is hereby discontinued and the file is closed," said Martino in the news release.
