An 84-year-old Timmins man is facing a number of charges after allegedly shooting a gun during a dispute with city bylaw officers.

The incident happened the morning of Aug. 8 at an undeveloped municipal lot on Frank Street off Haileybury Crescent in Porcupine.

Timmins Police say the accused, 84-year-old Vito Ierullo, is in an ongoing dispute with city officials over bylaw infractions. Bylaw officers went to the property with a court order to complete a site inspection.

"While on site, an altercation took place which escalated to the point where the 84-year-old property owner discharged a firearm in a manner reckless to the well-being of the bylaw enforcement officials," says police.

No one was injured.

Timmins Police's emergency response team (ERT) was called in to contain the area. During the investigation at the scene, criminal investigations division officers seized two firearms.

Ierullo has been charged with careless use of a firearm, two counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm, pointing a firearm, and discharging a firearm with intent to endanger life. None of the allegations have been tested in court.

He's been released from police custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 20.
