Police investigating shooting incident on Manitoulin Island

Social media postings advised residents to stay in their homes and lock their doors

Police services on Manitoulin Island are reported to be investigating what is believed to be a shooting incident in the Wiikwemkoong area, but there is yet to be any official confirmation from the police at this time. Police agencies have not returned calls for information. 

Ontario Provincial Police and Wiikwemkoong Tribal Police are working on the investigation according to social media postings. 

The Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory (WUT) Communications social media Facebook page had the following notice:

Active Incident Monday June 19th, 2023 6:07AM

The community-wide lockdown has been lifted. It is safe to go outdoors.

All WBE schools and all workplaces operated by WUT will be closed Monday June 19th, 2023.

We will continue to provide updates as they become available.

The Wikwemikong Police website posted a warning:

"WARNING: Take no action to apprehend a wanted person yourself. Report any information to the WTPS or the Police Service in your area. You can also contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. 

The Manitoulin Expositor Newspaper posted a notice of breaking news saying the police were investigating a multiple shooting incident, but added that specific details are unconfirmed.

Numerous attempts by Sudbury.com to contact the OPP and Indigenous police services to confirm details have been unsuccessful so far.
