Police investigating incident 'potentially involving a firearm'

Officers in tactical gear will be in the area for the next few hours

Timmins Police are investigating a "report of an incident potentially involving a firearm."

According to police, the incident happened this evening in the area of Sixth Avenue and Spruce Street North. 

"The Emergency Response Team (ERT) has been deployed in this area to perform a thorough search for any suspect(s) or evidence related to this occurrence; local residents should not be alarmed by the presence of officers in full tactical gear in the affected area for the next few hours‎," reads a news release. 

At the nearby 101 Mall, workers inside at the time said it was put on lockdown around 4:45 p.m. They were allowed to leave shortly after 6 p.m.

Right now, police say no one has been identified or located as having been injured.

"A strong police presence has been deployed and a perimeter may be set up to restrict access to this area as a precautionary measure," states the release.

The matter is under investigation by the Timmins Police Criminal Investigations Division.
