A man wanted for kidnapping and firearm-related offences in Brampton and in relation to Toronto murder was arrested in Timmins recently.

Yesterday, Timmins Police reported five people had been charged following a May 7 search warrant executed at a Pine Street North residence. Police seized $163,000 of fentanyl, about $5,000 in Canadian currency and a loaded 9 mm handgun.

One of the people charged was 21-year-old Kwami Garwood of Toronto.

Garwood was also wanted by Peel Region Police and the Toronto Police Service for separate incidents.

"The Timmins Police Service does not believe that these men were hiding out in Timmins to avoid arrest by GTA policing agencies," said Timmins Police corporate communications coordinator Marc Depatie.

"That said, we hold the position that all parties, especially Mr. Garwood, were actively involved in a significant opioid drug trafficking operation halted by the Timmins Police Service – Drug Enforcement Section."

For the Brampton incident, police say officers responded to a disturbance Sunday, March 28 around 3 a.m.

"An interaction occurred between officers and the male suspect, and he subsequently fled the area with the female victim in a vehicle. The vehicle was found unoccupied a short distance away. As a result of this interaction, the Special Investigations Unit invoked its mandate and conducted a separate investigation," reads the Peel Police news release.

The kidnapping victim was located safely a day later.

In Peel Region, Garwood is facing charges of kidnapping, forcible confinement, aggravated assault, assault, possession of a loaded/restricted firearm without a license, possession of a firearm without being the holder of a license, dangerous operation of a conveyance, and two counts of possession of a prohibited device or ammunition knowing it's unauthorized.

According to Peel Police, Garwood was also wanted by Toronto Police in relation to a July 2020 murder.
