Man facing charges after alleged grocery store attack

A security guard was bit during the incident and required medical attention at the hospital

The Timmins Police Service has investigated a late afternoon disturbance that occurred on Saturday, Oct. 29, resulting in injury to a 55-year-old female and a 60-year-old male.

The Timmins Police Service responded to an occurrence where a male person entered into an assaultive dispute with store staff at an Algonquin Boulevard grocery store.

A store patron was acting suspiciously and was approached by a female store clerk.

The suspect assaulted the woman. Two other patrons and a store security guard reacted to the altercation.

Each of the men were assaulted, and the security guard sustained a bite injury that required medical attention at a local hospital.

The responding Timmins Police Service officers were able to identify, locate, and arrest the male suspect as he was fleeing the scene.

As a result, Kofi Thomas, 34, of Timmins has been charged with:

  • Two counts of assault, contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Assault – cause bodily harm, contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Assault with a weapon, contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Cause disturbance, contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Two counts of fail to comply with a probation order, contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

The accused remains in police custody for the purposes of a bail hearing slated for today at Provincial Court in Timmins to answer to the charges laid against him Each victim received medical attention for the injuries they sustained during the altercation.
