Lengthy foot chase leads to arrest of suspected impaired driver

Police allege the accused left the scene of a crash, the charges include assaulting a police officer

A suspected impaired driver who ran from police for blocks after an early morning crash is facing several charges. 

Just before 3 a.m. today (Jan. 19), a Timmins Police officer came across a crash on Airport Road near the Theriault Boulevard intersection. 

"The driver fled on foot and was pursued by the officer," reads a Timmins Police news release

"After a lengthy foot pursuit, the driver was eventually arrested in the area of Ninth Avenue." 

Ninth Avenue is what Polaris Drive turns into after MacLean Drive.

The driver was arrested and brought to the station for breath testing. 

A 25-year-old man from Porcupine is charged with:

  • Impaired operation of a motor vehicle
  • Operate motor vehicle – concentration in excess of 80 mgs of alcohol per 100 mls of blood  
  • Fail to remain – collision 
  • 2 counts of assault with intent to resist arrest
  • 2 counts of assault a peace officer
  • Obstruct peace officer 
  • Escape lawful custody

The accused was released from police custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 31. 

None of the charges have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
