Kirkland Lake man charged after OPP seize fentanyl during traffic stop

57-year-old charged with trafficking

ENGLEHART - On Oct. 14, 2020, members of the North East Region (NER) Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) conducted a traffic stop on Highway 11 in the Town of Englehart.

Officers conducted a search of the vehicle, where they located and seized a quantity of suspected red powder fentanyl with a street value of approximately $36,000.

As a result of the investigation, the passenger of the vehicle has been arrested.

James Matthews, a 57-year-old resident from the Town of Kirkland Lake, is charged with:
    •    Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - Opioid, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA), and
    •    Fail to comply with probation order, contrary to section 733.1(1)(a) of the CC.

The accused was released by way of an Undertaking and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Nov. 10, 2020 in the City of Temiskaming Shores.
