KIRKLAND LAKE - The Kirkland Lake Police Services Board has issued a statement regarding the recent homicides in the community.
Since June, there have been five murders in the community of about 7,000 people. That total includes two double homicides.
In a Sept. 15 news release, the board said it's “deeply saddened by the tragic incidences that have occurred” in the town throughout this year.
“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends of the individuals affected by these devastating tragedies,” they said.
“While everyone awaits the outcome of the investigations, we are dedicated to maintaining the trust and confidence of the community we serve; Kirkland Lake continues to remain a safe place to live. We kindly request the community's patience and understanding during this challenging time.”
All of the victims are from Kirkland Lake.
On June 8, 47-year-old Ernest Renaud was shot and killed. In that investigation, 21-year-old Matthew Leiva-Pineda of Barrie was charged with first-degree murder. Jeffrey Rodrigue, 30, of Dobie was charged with accessory after the fact (murder).
On July 30, 37-year-old Amanda Lachapelle and 49-year-old Gabriel Marecki were killed in the first of two double homicides.

While doing a well-being check at a residence on Aug. 8, Kirkland Lake OPP found the bodies of 33-year-old Lea Thompson and 37-year-old Kyle Robertson.

Police have not released details on the cause of death in the double murder investigations or if the cases are linked.
The board says the detachment will make updates as the investigation continues.
