Iroquois Falls man accused of trafficking contraband cigarettes

Police say the accused had $1,650 worth of contraband cigarettes and $1,060 cash

IROQUOIS FALLS - On July 28, 2020, members from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) North East Region Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU), South Porcupine Crime Unit and members of the Iroquois Falls Detachment executed a warrant on Ambridge Drive, in the Town of Iroquois Falls.

As a result of the investigation, officers seized a substantial quantity of contraband cigarettes with an estimated street value of $1,650, and $1,060 cash.

As a result of the investigation, Andre Romain, age 65, of Iroquois Falls, was arrested and charged with: 

  • Trafficking in contraband tobacco, contrary to section 121.1 of the Criminal Code (CC),
  • Possession property obtained by crime under $5,000 - Canada, contrary to section 354(1) of the CC,
  • Possession of unmarked cigarettes for the purpose of sale, contrary to section 29 of the Tobacco Tax Act (TTA), and
  • Possess unmarked cigarettes, contrary to section 29 of the TTA.

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in the City of Timmins on Sept. 29, 2020.
