The Timmins Police Service is issuing a public safety advisory in relation to a possible fraudulent phone fraud campaign made by persons falsely representing the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation or some other fictitious lottery organization.

The Timmins Police Service is in receipt of a number of complaints alleging a phishing phone fraud campaign that appears to be underway in the Timmins area.

According to the nature of the complaints, unsolicited calls are received where the caller holds himself out to be a representative of a lottery organization explaining to the recipient of the call that they have won a spectacular cash prize or some other grand prize.

These fraudsters are quite convincing and insistent that in order to claim the prize, administrative fees or licensing costs must be satisfied.

This is contrary to Ontario law.

Residents are reminded that this campaign is fraudulent in nature.

In Ontario, you satisfy all required fees with the purchase price of any lottery ticket or draw ballot.

Details about any such calls should be forwarded directly to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or online.

Should anyone receive such a call, the Timmins Police Service recommend simply hanging up and continue to be guided by the principle that if it sounds too good to be true…it is.
