The Timmins Police Service responded to a landlord-tenant related call for service early yesterday afternoon at a Balsam Street North residence that is divided into separate apartments.
During the course of addressing the original call, responding Timmins Police officers located explosive materials and other items worthy of further police scrutiny in one of the apartments.
As a result, the Timmins Police found it necessary to contain the Balsam Street North apartment building for public safety reasons.
This measure was deemed necessary in relation to the explosive devices that were coincidentally located by the officers in order to preserve public safety and the investigative integrity of the ongoing matter.
The building had been evacuated by the Timmins Police Service for public safety reasons.
At the request of the Timmins Police Service, the OPP’s Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) attended the scene at approximately 9 p.m. yesterday evening to safely seize, contain, and dispose of the devices in a safe manner.
As part of the investigative process undertaken by the Timmins Police, a search warrant was executed at the Balsam Street building where explosive devices, firearms, ammunition, and suspected stolen property was located and seized as evidence.
The residence and the immediate area have been released by the Timmins Police Service.
The matter remains under investigation by the Timmins Police Service – Criminal Investigations Division.
The investigation is proceeding at a healthy pace.
