Driver charged with impaired after vehicle ends up in ditch in Temiskaming Shores

Two occupants fled the scene prior to police arrival, but were apprehended a short time later

TEMISKAMING SHORES - On May 9, 2020 shortly before 8:30 a.m., members of the Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a call for a single motor vehicle collision (MVC) on West Road in the City of Temiskaming Shores.

Further investigation revealed that a motor vehicle was travelling eastbound when it lost control and struck the ditch. Two occupants fled the scene on foot.

Police arrived a short time after and located the driver and pedestrian near Browning Street. Further investigation revealed that the driver had been consuming alcoholic beverages and was arrested.

Thomas Sedgemore, a 24-year-old resident of the Township of Coleman, is charged with:
    •    Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC), and
    •    Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the CC.

The vehicle was towed from the scene and impounded for seven days. The accused was released by way of an Undertaking and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on July 7, 2020, in the City of Temiskaming Shores.

The OPP reminds motorists that any amount of alcohol or drug can impair one's ability to drive. If you observe a suspected impaired driver, please call 911 or contact the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122 and report it.
