Cochrane driver facing impaired charge

The charge stems from a traffic complaint

On Aug. 13, 2020 at 9:05 p.m., members from the James Bay Detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded a traffic complaint regarding a possible impaired driver leaving a business located on Sixth Street, Town of Cochrane.  

Officers attended the scene and subsequently observed the suspect vehicle had returned to the business. Upon speaking with the driver, officers determined the individual was under the influence of a drug and he was arrested.  

Further investigation by a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) was completed and as a result of this evaluation, the driver, William Chamandy, age 35, from Cochrane, was charged with:  

  • Operation While Impaired - Alcohol and Drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code

The accused was released by way of an Undertaking and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Sept. 11, 2020, in Cochrane.    

He was issued a 90-day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension (ADLS), and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
