Charges laid after woman held captive, assaulted, say police

Charges have been laid after a woman was held captive and assaulted by her spouse, say police. 

Over the last 30 days, Timmins Police say there were a "lengthy set of incidents" that happened where a 39-year-old woman was allegedly held captive and assaulted.

"The investigation revealed that the suspect had repeatedly held the female victim captive on a number of occasions and would proceed to assault her when she would try to escape. At one point, the suspect rendered the victims cell phone inoperative so that she could not contact other persons," reads the Timmins Police news release.

The suspect was arrested by police yesterday (Sept. 18) evening. 

A 54-year-old man from Timmins, who is not being named to protect the identity of the victim, is charged with:

  • 3 counts of aggravated assault 
  • 3 counts of assault causing bodily harm
  • 6 counts of forcible confinement
  • 6 counts of assault 
  • 6 counts of uttering threats 
  • Sexual assault 
  • 4 counts of possession of firearm/ammunition contrary to a prohibition order
  • 24 counts of failing to comply with a probation order
  • Mischief

The accused was held in police custody for a bail hearing this morning. 

None of the charges have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
