Charges laid after police investigate historic assaults, sexual assault

The search yielded two firearms, suspected cannabis concentrate, and over $12,500 in Canadian currency

TEMISKAMING SHORES – On May 15, 2020, members of the Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) and the Temiskaming Crime Unit commenced an investigation into historical assaults and a sexual assault. There were three separate alleged incidents that occurred between April and September 2019, in the Town of Cobalt. 

Further investigation revealed that the accused was in possession of firearms and suspected controlled substances. A warrant was issued for the accused's residence, and the search yielded two firearms, suspected cannabis concentrate, and over $12,500 in Canadian currency. 

As a result of the investigation a 52-year-old resident of Cobalt, is arrested and charged with:   

  • Assault - spousal, contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code (CC) (two counts), 
  • Sexual assault, contrary to section 271 of the CC, 
  • Careless storage of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition, contrary to section 86(1) of the CC,  
  • Careless use of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition, contrary to section 86(1) of the CC,  
  • Possession property obtained by crime over $5,000 - Canada, contrary to section 354(1)(a); and 
  • Distribute illicit cannabis, contrary to section 9(1)(a)(iv) of the Cannabis Act (CA).  

The accused was released on an Undertaking and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice at a later date in the City of Temiskaming Shores.
