A counterfeit $50 has been used in Kapuskasing, says police. The bill on the left is counterfeit.

KAPUSKASING - A counterfeit bill has been circulating in Kapuskasing, says police.

On Jan. 23 around 7 p.m., a business reported a counterfeit bill that had been used at a Brunetville Road business within the previous 10 days.

"Unfortunately, there was insufficient evidence to identify a suspect in the case, however, this can serve as a reminder to be mindful of potential counterfeits. The attached photo contains the bill used in Kapuskasing on the left, with a proper $50 bill on the right," reads a James Bay OPP news release.

Police are providing tips on how to spot a fake bill. They are:

  • Feel the smooth, unique texture of the note. It's made from a single piece of polymer with some transparent areas.
  • Feel the raised ink on the shoulders of the large portrait, the large number and the words "Bank of Canada"
  • Look for transparency through the large window containing a metallic portrait and building.
  • The building should change colours as you tilt the bill.
  • Look at the numbers in and around the large window that match the value of the note. Some of the numbers appear in reverse.
  • Look at the maple leaves that border the large window. Some of the leaves cross into the window.

If you're suspicious about a bill that someone is trying to give you, police suggest:

  • Politely refusing the money and explaining that you suspect that it's counterfeit.
  • Asking the customer for another note (and checking it too).
  • Advising the customer to check the suspicious note with local police.
  • Informing your local police of a possible attempt to pass counterfeit money.
