3 charged with impaired driving over the weekend

KAPUSKASING - Taking three alleged impaired drivers off the roads also led to drug trafficking and stolen vehicle charges. 

Over the weekend, James Bay OPP officers charged three people with impaired driving in Kapuskasaing. 

The first incident was on Oct. 14 around 12:30 a.m. when officers responded to a disturbance on Brunetville Road. When officers located a vehicle involved, OPP allege that the driver had been drinking and was brought back to the detachment for more testing. 

A 32-year-old from Opasatika is charged with operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), and drive vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available. The accused is scheduled to appear in court in Kapuskasing on Nov. 6.

Around the same time the next morning, an officer on patrol stopped a vehicle on Brunelle Road South. After speaking to the driver, police allege they had been drinking. The suspect was arrested and brought to the detachment for testing. 

During the arrest, police seized suspected methamphetamines and ecstasy, as well as a prohibited spring-loaded switchblade. 

A 29-year-old from Val Rita is charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs 
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Possession of a prohibited or restricted weapon at an unauthorized place 
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - methamphetamine
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - other drugs
  • Drive vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available
  • Driving while under suspension
  • Fail to surrender insurance card
  • Fail to notify change of address

The accused was released from police custody and has a Nov. 6 court date in Kapuskasing.

Later that day, around 7 p.m., officers responded to a call for a person trying to steal multiple vehicles on Brunetville Road.

When officers located the suspect, they allege that the person had consumed "intoxicating substances". 

A 54-year-old woman from Kapuskasing is charged with three counts of theft of motor vehicle, operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, failure or refusal to comply with demand,driving while under suspension, and fail to notify change of address.

The accused was released from police custody is scheduled to be in court on Nov. 20.

None of the charges have been tested in court and the accused are considered innocent unless proven guilty.
