25-year-old faces obstruction, drug charges after Cobalt break and enter

Police say the accused provided a false name to officers

On Sept. 17, 2021 shortly after 9:30 p.m. members of the Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call for a break and enter in progress on Commission Street in the Town of Cobalt.

Preliminary investigation revealed that two individuals had entered a residence and were confronted by a home owner. One of the individuals fled the scene on foot prior to police arrival.   

A short time after, police spoke to the individual who was still inside the residence and she provided a false name to the officers.  

The accused was placed under arrest. A search incident to arrest yielded a quantity of a suspected controlled substance.  

Katrina Ash, a 25-year-old resident of Cobalt has been charged with:

  • Obstruct peace officer, contrary to section 129(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking opioid (other than heroin), contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA)
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 - in Canada, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC
  • Failure to comply with release order - other than to attend court, contrary to section 145(5)(a) of the CC

The accused was held for a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice at a later date in the City of Temiskaming Shores.

The Temiskaming OPP would like to remind the public, to report all suspicious activity to police. Try to obtain as much information as possible while assuring your safety, and do not interfere with the crime scene.
