14-year-old faces assault, animal cruelty charges

Accused is alleged to have hit a 62-year-old man before kicking his dog

The Timmins Police Service has investigated a late afternoon disturbance that occurred on Saturday, July 31 resulting in an assault to a 62-year-old male person and his dog.

The Timmins Police Service responded to an occurrence where a male person, who had been walking his dog, entered into a verbal dispute with a group of teenagers regarding the unnecessary usage of foul language in public.

The altercation occurred near the intersection of Commercial Avenue and Clouthier Street and escalated to the point where [it is alleged that] one of the teens struck the man in the face with an open hand.

[It is further alleged that] the suspect then proceeded to kick the man’s dog and then produced a knife and cut the dog’s leash.

The responding Timmins Police officers were able to identify, locate, and arrest the male suspect a short distance from the original scene.

The suspect provided a false name to the police upon being arrested.

As a result, a 14-year-old who cannot be named in keeping with statutory requirements, has been charged with:
    •    assault contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    cruelty to an animal contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    personation with intent to mislead contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    three counts of fail to comply with release order contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

The accused remains in police custody for the purposes of a bail hearing slated for today at Provincial Court in Timmins to answer to the charge laid against him.

A second 14-year-young person involved in the incident was charged with a single count of fail to comply with release order contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.
